Notes for JOHN HUTCHISON:

Commander RN.

Captain John Hutchison was an Officer on board H.M.S. Herald which completed one of the longest and most important surveying cruises of the golden age of world hydrography.  This voyage of HMS Herald, under the command of Henry Mangles Denham, encompassed much of the South-west Pacific and substantial parts of the Australian coast.  From 1852 to 1861, the Herald surveyed and charted known land masses and suspected hazards, thereby establishing safe routes for shipping.  That some of these charts are still in use is testimony to the accuracy and skill of those who created them.  His death was reported in "The Advertiser" July 10, 1869 - "We regret the death of Capt. John Hutchinson of the Beatrice less than a week after Lt. Guy, of the same vessel, was buried with military honours.  We believe hardships undergone during a polar expedition undermined his constitution".

Notes for JOHN DE MESTRE HUTCHISON:

Admiral John Hutchison.  CMG, CVO.

Johnnie Hutchison went into the navy and served under the Prince of

Battenberg and was given charge of George V when he was a snotty.

Admiral Battenburg was never given a command after the 1914 war broke out, neither were any of his proteges so Johnnie never had anything but shore posts.

Johnnie Hutchison  attained the rank of Admiral.
